With JJ Abrams currently filming Star Wars: Episode 7 and directors Josh Trank (Chronicle) and Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) set to begin preparations on the spin-off films soon, fans have been impatiently waiting to hear who’s going to be taking the reins for Episodes 8 and 9. As of today we have the answer. Kind of. We think.
The two sites that broke the story, Deadline and The Wrap, don’t exactly see eye-to-eye on the details. They both agree that Rian Johnson (Looper, Brick) will be directing Episode 8. They both agree he’ll be writing Episodes 8 and 9. However, they seem to disagree on one key point. Deadline says he’s directing both films, while The Wrap says he’s only directing Episode 8. To be honest, that’s a big thing for your sources to conflict on.
As for official word? Nothing from Disney yet, but Johnson sent out a tweet this afternoon that contained only this video.
I’m sure we’ll hear something official soon (which should clear up the confusion), but until then that tweet is as close to a confirmation that someone’s working on Star Wars as you can get without sending out a press release.
