Sam Raimi’s been fairly secretive about his upcoming prequel to The Wizard of Oz, the grandiosely titled Oz, The Great and Powerful. The film comes out in less than a year, and today’s Comic Con trailer marks the first footage revealed (aside from a few blurry seconds in an Entertainment Tonight clip). And based on that trailer, it was worth the wait.
Admittedly, that last shot of the CGI witch hand is just… so… awful, but how great is everything else? Apparently when you let Sam Raimi loose in a fantasy world, you get some very cool little creatures and nice touches like not only the requisite Oz color reveal, but an aspect ratio one as well. Might it turn out terrible (I’m looking at you, Burton’s Alice in Wonderland)? Maybe, but despite the much-maligned Spider-Man 3, Raimi’s track record is pretty strong. I’m optimistic.
Besides, flying monkeys.
