If you’re the kind of person who reads this site, then I don’t have to tell you that Veronica Mars was one of the great underappreciated TV series of the past 10 years. Loved by its small but devoted and evangelical cult following, the show mixed noir detective mysteries and teen high school drama with a smart, badass female lead played by Kristen Bell. Unfortunately, the show’s fans, despite begging everyone they knew to watch couldn’t save the constantly on-the-bubble series and it was cancelled after a slightly retooled third season and before a heavily retooled fourth one would have happened.
Since the show’s cancellation in 2007, both Bell and creator Rob Thomas have spoken at length about plans for a Veronica Mars film. It’s always been one of those projects that’s totally about to happen, just as soon as fill-in-the-blank. The latest fill-in-the-blank may actually be the one that gets this thing made though.
Yes, they’re taking it to the fans and funding the film (or at least part of it) through Kickstarter. The goal is set at $2 million, which if it is met would be the second highest in Kickstarter history. It’s a pretty safe bet that the project will meet (and probably blow past) that goal, as the page went up this morning and it’s already received over $800,000. I know I’m in for $50.
